Nu’maan ibn Bashir, raadi allahu anhu, narrated, “Is it not a fact that you can eat and drink at your will, while I have seen your Prophet, salalahu alayhi wa sallam, not getting even enough raw dates which would be taken by him to his fill??”

[narrated by Muslim and Tirmidhi]

In another narration, it has been reported that Nu’maan, raadi allahu anhu, quoted Umar, raadi Allahu anhu, as saying while describing the ease in the life which the people enjoyed, “I have seen the Messenger of Allah, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, to pass his day restlessly due to hunger having no raw dates even which would remove his hunger.”

[narrated by Muslim, Ahmad, Tayaalsi, Ibn Sa’ad, Ibn Maajah, Abu Awaanah and others]

Abu Hurairah, raadi Allahu anhu, narrated, “Once I visited the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam. He was performing salaah in a sitting posture. I asked him, “Oh Messenger of Allah! I saw you performing Salaah in a sitting posture. What has happened to you?” He replied, “Hunger, Oh Abu Hurairah!!” On hearing that I wept. He consoled me and said, “Don’t weep, oh Abu Hurairah! One suffering with hunger will not be reckoned strictly on the Day of Judgment, provided that he tolerates that in this world sincerely [for pleasing Allah and seeking virtues].”

[narrated by Abu Na’eem, Khalib, Ibn Asaakir, and Ibn al-Najjar]
