Ibn Qutaybah mentions a telling story in his book ‘Uyoonul Akhbaar..

Al-Waleed ibn Yazeed went out for hajj with Abdullaah ibn Mu’aawiyah ibn Abdullaah ibn Ja’far, and while on their way they were playing chess. A man from the tribe of Thaqeef asked permission to enter upon al-Waleed, so he permitted him and covered the chess game with a handkerchief. So when the man entered, he greeted al-Waleed and asked about his need.

So al-Waleed said to him, “Do you recite the Quraan?”

The bedouin said, “No, Ameerul Mu’mineen. Many commitments kept me occupied from it.”

So al-Waleed said, “Do you know fiqh?”

The bedouin said, “No.”

Al-Waleed sad, “Do you narrate poetry?”

The bedouin said, “No.”

He said, “Do you know anything of the history of the Arabs?”

The bedouin said, “No.”

So al-Waleed turned away from the bedouin and uncovered the chess game and said, “Checkmate.”

Abdullaah ibn Mu’aawiyah said, “O Ameerul Mu’mineen!”

Al-Waleed replied, “Be quiet, there is no one with us.”

Al-Waleed meant with his words, “there is no one with us,” that one who does not recite the Quraan, doesn’t know fiqh, does not narrate poetry and does not study history or the religion is like the one who does not exist and is not acknowledged, even if the person is present.

.. one wonders what he would have said about our likes today
